E2 28 Day Challenge Day 9: Snowpocylapyse

Yesterday the snow hit Portland, and with snow in the Northwest, you really never know what to expect- sometimes it melts before even hitting the ground, and sometimes you get 5-inches, as we did last night. When snow sticks, it pretty much shuts down the city. While all the transplants from the midwest retorically ask, “You call this a snow storm?”, and head out in their all-wheel drive vehicles, native Cascadians, cower in our homes when not skidding out in our Honda accords, venturing out for provisions only as needed. It isn’t that we don’t like snow, we just really have no idea how to manage in it.

Snoypocalypse

No groceries to be had at our house, we braved the conditions, heading two blocks down the street for dinner at the Woodsman Tavern. Matthew and I have tried to get in for dinner several times, unsuccessfully without reservations. But tonight, tonight the denizens of the Richmond neighborhood dined in one of Portland’s most popular restaurants reservation free. Thank you snowpocylapyse.

As for the diet, I’m still mulling over my thoughts from yesterday. While no meat, dairy and heavily processed foods are a snap to keep off the radar, oil, and asking for oil free dishes in restaurants continues to seem like not so much of a big deal. Here, I’m clearly braking rules without abandon, but why? Because I’m lazy? Because in the end I think it can’t really matter that much?

FOOD DIARY:

Breakfast: A bowl of coconut dal. This is the last bowl as this red lentil and coconut milk soups has been in my fridge for a little less than a week now.

Snack: Kite Hill nut cheese and blueberries, a banana, several cups of coffee.

Lunch: Lentil soup, asparagus, fava bean and pea salad, kale salad and a small piece of tofu in carrot ginger dressing. Not oil free as it was a catered lunch for a work meeting, but a great plate to veg-load on.

Snack: Lara Uber Bar. I’m on the fence with these bars. I like the original Lara bar, but the sweet and salty nut and dried fruit bar tasted more like dessert than a healthy mid-afternoon snack.

Dinner: Proud to have overcome a strong desire to go rouge and indulge in the Woodsman’s northwest dishes spotlighting fresh seafood, and a short rib stroganoff made for the most blustery of winter nights. I instead ordered two salads, one pear and bitter greens, the second, grapefruit and beets. I couldn’t resist fries with sriracha mayo, breaking two rules: eggs and oil. This morning I was worse for it.

The Woodsman

Drinking: 2 rye based cocktails at dinner. Walking 2 miles home from work in the snow buys you that kind of treat.
